There may come a time when you’re required to help move a heavy item either at home or at work. And while you can outsource this type of task out to someone else, like an experienced warehouse unloader or a professional mover, with the right planning and preparation, you likely can get these items moved on your own.

To help you learn how this can safely be done, here are three tips for moving heavy items at home or work.

Use The Right Equipment

Before you attempt to move any kind of heavy item, you should first secure the right equipment so that you’re not having to put too much stress and pressure on your body. Not only will using the right equipment help to make it so that you’re less likely to hurt yourself in the process of moving the item, but it can also make moving it easier and less of a hassle.

Depending on what you’re moving, you might want to use equipment like a furniture dolly, carrying straps, or a shoulder dolly. You should also use plastic to wrap around the item so that everything stays secure. This way, when you’re moving it, you won’t have to worry about drawers opening up or other items falling off and getting in your way.

Slide It When You Can

Sometimes, even with some of the above-mentioned equipment, you still may not be strong enough to really lift the item that you’re trying to move. Or, if you just don’t want to put yourself or the item at risk, there are other options that you can try.

One thing that you may want to attempt is to slide the items as opposed to lifting it. To do this, you can put something like a blanket or even plastic lids under the item you’re trying to move, then you can pull or slide the item over rather than having to try to pick the whole thing up and lift it to a new location.

Work With A Partner

Whatever strategy you choose to use when you’re trying to move something heavy at work or in your home, you should never attempt to do this by yourself.

Not only can working with a partner help you to shoulder the load of the item you’re trying to move, but they can also be your eyes when you can’t see where you’re walking or how to best maneuver the item as you’re moving it. And if the worst thing happens and you do hurt yourself while trying to do some heavy lifting, you’ll have someone there to help you get the medical help you need.

If you have to move a heavy item, consider using the tips mentioned above to help you figure out the best way for you to do this.
